History

In the beginning, JPEG aimed at transporting pictures meeting the CCIR (International Radio Consultative Committe) - 601* standard over a network. Later the scope of the project expanded to create a method of transporting many different types of still pictures..

*The standard -601 picture consists of 720 x 576 pixels x 16 bits (for a total of 828 Kbytes). Each pixel has an 8 bit Luminance signal [Y], and two 8 bit multiplexed color signals [U, V]. JPEG's objective was to transfer this picture within ten seconds.
