There are two methods of encoding in DCT: Baseline System, and Extended System.In the Baseline System, a required minimal function set is defined for the DCT Coder/Decoder.
The Extended System has many options for various applications including hierarchical coding, 12 bit input channel coding, and arithmetic coding.
